When the body finds a way around limited motion, weakness, or poor control, the painful area is often only part of the story.

What Is a Functional Movement Assessment?

A functional movement assessment is a structured look at how your body performs basic movement patterns. Rather than focusing only on where you feel discomfort, it considers how your joints, muscles, nervous system, balance, coordination, and movement habits work together.

The word functional matters. Your body does not move in isolated pieces when you pick up a child, squat to a chair, reach into a cabinet, carry groceries, swing a golf club, or lift a barbell. A movement assessment uses simple tasks to observe the connections between those pieces.

This is not a pass-or-fail fitness test, and it is not designed to label normal movement as bad. Bodies vary. Mobility needs are different for a CrossFit athlete than for a parent returning to exercise after pregnancy, and both differ from the needs of someone whose job involves hours at a desk or repetitive lifting. The purpose is to identify meaningful patterns that may relate to your goals, symptoms, or physical demands.

Why Pain Location Is Only One Clue

Pain deserves attention, but it does not always point directly to the cause of a movement problem. For example, a person with knee discomfort during a squat may have limited ankle motion, reduced hip control, a training-load issue, or irritation in the knee itself. Often, more than one factor is involved.

A functional assessment helps a clinician ask better questions. Does the discomfort appear during a certain range of motion? Does it improve when the movement is modified? Is one side moving differently? Is there a recent injury, a change in training volume, poor sleep, stress, or a work demand contributing to the pattern?

This broader view prevents a common mistake: treating every painful area as though it exists alone. It also helps avoid the opposite mistake of assuming every movement difference is the source of pain. Findings must be considered alongside your health history, examination, symptoms, and, when appropriate, diagnostic testing or referral.

What Happens During a Movement Assessment?

Your assessment should begin with a conversation, not a series of exercises. Your clinician may ask when your symptoms started, what makes them better or worse, what activities matter most to you, and what you have already tried. They may also ask about past injuries, surgeries, exercise routines, work demands, sleep, and other health factors that can affect recovery.

From there, the clinician may observe your posture, gait, joint motion, strength, balance, and ability to control movement. Depending on your needs, you might be asked to squat, lunge, hinge at the hips, step up, balance on one leg, raise your arms overhead, rotate your trunk, or perform a task related to your sport or job.

The movements themselves are usually straightforward. What matters is the quality of motion and your response to it. A clinician may watch for restricted range of motion, compensation, asymmetry, instability, poor timing, or pain. They may also compare movement before and after a hands-on treatment, mobility drill, or simple cue to see what changes.

For an athlete, assessment may include sport-specific patterns such as landing, cutting, throwing, or lifting mechanics. For an office worker with neck tension and headaches, it may place more attention on the upper back, shoulder blades, neck motion, breathing mechanics, and the way prolonged positions affect symptoms. The exam should fit the person, not force every patient through the same checklist.

Movement Screens Are a Starting Point

A movement screen can be useful for organizing observations, but it is only one part of a clinical examination. A screen cannot diagnose a condition on its own, predict every future injury, or replace a detailed evaluation when pain, numbness, weakness, dizziness, or other concerning symptoms are present.

That distinction matters. Movement findings are most useful when they lead to a practical question: What should we address first, and how will we know if it is helping? A good plan connects assessment findings to real-life goals, such as walking the Bentonville trails without flare-ups, returning to strength training, sleeping more comfortably, or lifting at work with greater confidence.

How Assessment Findings Shape Your Care Plan

What You Can Learn From Your Results

A valuable assessment gives you more than a list of limitations. You should leave with a clearer understanding of what your body is doing, what may be contributing to your symptoms, and what you can do next.

Your clinician may explain that one hip is not rotating as comfortably as the other, that your upper back is contributing to limited overhead reach, or that your squat improves when ankle mobility is addressed. They should also explain what those findings mean in everyday language and which findings deserve the most attention.

Progress can be measured in several ways. Pain level is one measure, but it is not the only one. You may track range of motion, balance, strength, exercise tolerance, sleep, ability to work, or confidence returning to an activity. A better benchmark is often specific: carrying your toddler without back pain, completing a shift with less neck tension, or running three miles without symptoms the next day.

When to Schedule an Assessment

Consider a movement assessment when pain keeps returning, an old injury still affects how you move, or you feel limited during activities you enjoy. It can also be useful before returning to sport after time away, when beginning a new training routine, or when you notice that one side of your body feels consistently weaker, tighter, or less coordinated.

Seek prompt medical evaluation for severe trauma, sudden or progressive weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control, unexplained fever, significant numbness, chest pain, or other urgent symptoms. A conservative movement-based examination is valuable, but it should be part of responsible care and appropriate referral when needed.

Your body is built to adapt, and movement patterns can change with the right guidance, consistency, and pacing. A well-performed assessment gives you a starting point – not a label – so your next steps can support the life, work, family time, and activities that matter most to you.
